What do I do to make it work?

My boyfriend brings me down because he is pessimistic and temperamental. We have some arguments but they grow into big deal things when its not. I don't like it when he curses so much when hes angry, when he complains about life in general, when he gets mad about little things. But I deal because I'm patient and he's learning through me. But sometimes I'm dealing with a kid or something.
