2007-2010 miata for first car. Read!?

IM about to turn 16 and I have a 20k budget. Now im a guy and at first I was just gonna get a truck but I recently got put in a dual enrollment thing for next year and will live at anothrr school that is about an hour awaw and its in the city. So my dad suggested a car that gets decent gas mileage and holds up well. He showed me some miata because if I get a car I want a convertible. hows insurance on the car? What if my dad was listed as driver? Are there any other cars that compare to miata in quality?
